Saliva ferning is a fertility detector (Studies) Researchers have been observing and studying the phenomenon of ferning in cervical fluid since 1945, when they observed microscopic crystal formations in cervical fluid (cervical mucus). Subsequent researchers have studied the ferning of other body fluids, including saliva. In 1969, Dr. Biel Cassals (Spanish gynecologist) studied the crystallization of saliva. His presentation to the Barcelona Medical Board was in regard to the relationship between hormonal changes during the female menstrual cycle and the crystallization of saliva, indicating that the ferning saliva is virtually identical in appearance to the arborization effect of cervical fluid. He put his findings into use in 1971 when he developed a microscope intended to test for ferning in saliva. His clinical experiments involved a number of physicians testing the apparatus for approximately 10 months on a group of 1,000 women. These women used the saliva test as a method to ascertain when they were fertile. According to Biel Cassals, this method's success rate was around 96.2%. A study conducted in 1991 (M. Guida) at the Institute of Gynecology and Obstetrics Clinic in Napoli, Italy, achieved a positive result in 92% of the cases studied, matching salivary ferning to the fertile preovulatory and ovulatory period. A further study conducted in 1992 in Milan, Italy (M. Barbato, A. Pandolfi) and Naples, Italy, (M. Guida) examined the use-effectiveness of salivary ferning as a diagnostic testing aid to natural family planning. This study used a mini microscope. They concluded that there is a direct correlation between salivary ferning and the fertile period.

1. How accurate is OvaTel®?

2. What are the side effects of using OvaTel®?
There are none. OvaTel® is completely natural and safe. It uses the
body's natural resources (saliva) without the mess or embarrassment of some tests of today.
Its non-invasive - no need to swallow or inhale anything.
3. When can I use OvaTel®?
OvaTel® can be used any day and at any time. (Best time is morning
or 1-2 hours after eating, drinking, smoking or brushing your teeth).
4. What gives misleading results?
1. Some prescription drugs - check with your doctor.
2. Pregnancy or recent Birth.
3. Menopause.
4. Eating salty foods or drinking sugary drinks (especally soda)
before taking test is not recommended.
5. How much saliva do I need?
Not much - just a sliver or just enough to make the lens wet. You can place a small drop
of saliva on your finger or place the tip of your tongue on the lens which should be enough.
Make sure you have allowed the saliva to dry at least 3-4 minutes before inserting back into the
holder.
Avoid air bubbles.
6. Why can't I see anything?
As everyones eye focus is different (just like using binoculars) the eyepiece must be turned
(2-3 complete turns) and adjusted to suit
your eye focus.
7. I am using another form of ovulation test (urine) in conjuction with OvaTel®
and they differ in their results - WHY?
The difference between the saliva and urine ovulation test is that they
are testing for
2 different hormons always present in the female body. One being the
Luteinizing hormone or "LH" (in urine) which is released or increases when you have already
ovulated (passed).
With saliva tests, you are testing for an increase of salt or saline levels in your body due
to estrogen. There is an increase (surge/spike) in estrogen levels approx 2-3 days prior
to & during ovulation, (as seen by a fern like pattern in your dried saliva
viewed thru the OvaTel® microscope monitor) therefore, giving you a longer
and better chance to conceive the baby you have always wanted. (Remember sperm only survives
for about 24 - 72 hours after intercourse so you could have already missed your best chances
for conceiving by using the urine tests only.)
8. I still can't see any ferning - what now?
Estrogen is always present in the female body but not everyone gets an estrogen increase/surge
every month. If you are following the instructions correctly over a period of time
and continue to have absence of any ferning pattern - check with your doctor. It could be
that you have an undisclosed problem ie. not producing enough estrogen or even ovulating.
9. I am seeing ferns all the time. Why is that?
A small percentage of women produce a high amount of estrogen all
month long. One reason could
be that you might not be producing enough progesterone. If you think this is true in your case,
please consult your doctor or health care provider or another simpler reason
for seeing ferns
all the time is you could be pregnant!
10. How do I clean my OvaTel?
For best results and use of your OvaTel is it important to clean the lens after every use -
use a soft cloth or lens cleaner. However, water and a soft tissue will do just as well (don't
rub or scrub the lens too hard as you might scratch it) As an extra measure - be sure to blow
on the lens before replacing the lens back into the holding case and/or before your next use.
This is because sometimes fibers from the cloth or tissue get left behind
on the lens and
could be mistaken for cracks in the lens!
11. Can I use OvaTel® as a contraceptive device?
NO. This is not advisable. Since a sperm can survive for up to 72 hours after
intercourse you may still have a chance of becoming pregnant even
if it’s on a non-fertile day.
